Nebraska football coach Bill Callahan wasted little time determining the fate of Maurice Purify's future with the Huskers. Friday afternoon, Callahan announced that Purify will be reinstated on the football team, but will sit out the Huskers' season opener against Nevada on Saturday, Sept. 1. "I met with Maurice Purify this afternoon and I believe that he has made a sincere effort to redeem himself and move forward in a positive direction," Callahan said in a prepared statement Friday. "During his suspension from our program these past six weeks he has complied with all of the requirements imposed upon him by the legal system, the general expectations of a student-athlete in our program, and the specific additional conditions demanded of him as a result of his actions. "Our primary concern for Maurice continues to be his personal well-being and we will continue to be proactive in that regard." Purify will also face other discipline within the program, although Callahan did not disclose what additional discipline he will face. Purify is also required to perform "extensive" community service, starting immediately and continuing throughout the 2007 season. Callahan also said Purify must meet the guidelines set forth in the probation he received Wednesday in Lancaster County Court, including not entering a drinking establishment and random testing for drugs and alcohol. Purify was sentenced to 12 months probation and fined $1,250 after pleading no contest to four charges stemming from two incidents that took place during a six-week period earlier this year. He was arrested after a fight at a Lincoln bar in May and was ticketed for DWI a month later. Callahan's decision to allow Purify to return will be a big shot in the arm to the Husker offense. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound senior caught 34 passes for 630 yards and seven touchdowns and was being touted as one of the Huskers' main threats heading into the 2007 campaign. The Huskers open the 2007 season Saturday, Sept. 1 against Nevada. Purify will not be eligible to play until the Huskers' first road game of the year, Saturday, Sept. 8 at Wake Forest. |
